2012 Unfiltered Finch Hollow Chardonnay
2012 Unfiltered Finch Hollow Chardonnay

Winemaker Ted Henry followed the innovation of consultant Dimitri Tchelistcheff in using only wine from the top-half of the barrels to create this lush, single-vineyard wine.  This unique winemaking technique allows us to produce this wine unfined and unfiltered, offering a golden color and true varietal essence for our most full-bodied Chardonnay.  Grapes from the Finch Hollow Vineyard are intensely flavored, with a distinct tropical fruit character. Barrel fermentation in new French oak barrels, softens the wine and creates a supple mouthfeel with a hint of bright fruit.  The rich mouth filling flavors of this opulent Chardonnay linger throughout its long finish.

93 Points. Gold Medal Exceptional. Beverage Testing Institute. Golden silver color with a minute haze. Aromas of roasted coconut, praline, grilled apples, and buttercream with a silky, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a long, toasty oak, vanilla cream, and spice finish. A very nice and smooth oaky chardonnay for sipping or the table with rich poultry dishes.

94 Points. Gold Medal. Cellar Selction. Wine Enthusiast. It starts off oaky, which is understandable given that it was aged in 100% new French barrels. Then the acidity and lees hit you, a welcome parry to the woody sweetness. Lurking just below the surface are ripe flavors of mango, pineapple, peach, kumquat and lime. It’s a flashy, opulent wine, but young. It will show best after 2016. - S. Heimoff (June, 2014)
