Year of the Boar
2007-11-01

Don Luis bagged the damage causing Boar.

I guess many of you are aware that 2007 is the “Year of the Boar” in the Chinese Calendar.

The Boars, themselves, may also be aware! This summer they decided to invade our vineyard area, and you can imagine, with harvest approaching, how nervous we are about our vineyards. The Boars have the reputation of breeding rapidly and doing much damage.

Fortunately, Don Luis, a long time employee was able to bag an offending Boar with his .22 and hopefully discourage more of them from coming

As you can see from the photos, Don Luis is now famous as a cook as well as a hunter. He dressed the Boar and then prepared a Boar feast for all of our vineyard and winery people. He cut the meat into pieces, added salt and boiled for 2 ½ hours in a large copper kettle. With no exceptions, everyone liked this meat, and said it tasted like beef brisket. I wasn’t there when he cooked the delicious liver but hardly any of the Boar meat went to waste.

Our harvest finished this year mid October, and the berry size is the smallest we’ve ever had. This is great because small berries add flavor and color to the wine. Dimitri, our winemaker, is even having thoughts of the best harvest ever!

Don Luis also cooked the Boar for the staff o enjoy. It was great!
